exhibition statement:
This solo exhibition of new works by Khaulah Naima Nuruddin, curated by Tayina Deravile, addresses the complexities of being a Black woman navigating social systems that are deliberately designed to oppress. It is a celebratory acknowledgment of the work Black Women do to survive and thrive beyond barriers. Nuruddin’s meticulous, laborious drawings, paintings and installations are representative of the thousands of hours beyond the so-called “norm” of work that a Black woman must manage to gain freedom and success. These dynamic works are quiet and intense, offering the viewer privileged access to an experience that may not be their own.
