 JOURNEY

The title of the exhibition refers to a "journey of exploration" within my studio practice.

When depicting a figure, I had always started with the pose of the body as a signifier of attitude. The head came last and often after a struggle.

When I began making head drawings in my notebooks, I recognized and was intrigued to see a new path of exploration. I redrew the heads on sheets of paper with ink and brush.

I realized I was interested in the face and head as a source of action and mark-making. When I added flat, luscious color to these sculptural drawings, manipulation of space and volume became vital.

Playing with color and new materials led to large, ephemeral collages on the wall made of multiple drawings and material used to make them. Mylar splashed with spray paint pinned around the drawings became colored skins that connected the different pieces of the collage, making one whole form that echoed, in part, the shapes depicted in the drawings.

Ultimately, the journey led back to a flat, more linear piece, enriched with new excitement about color and placement.
